Looking for Bryan Pendleton?
Ok, so, the web seems to be totally polluted with references to "Bryan
Pendleton"s. I'm not the first, not the last, but I'm one of them.
Since you might be looking for one of us, I'll tell you who I am, and
drop some links to relevant other Bryan Pendletons.
A brief history of this Bryan Pendleton
I was born January 26, 1978, in Sharonville, Ohio, on the outskirts of
Cincinnati. I grew up in Sharonville, where I attended the Princeton City School system which was, at
least at that point in time, a very high calibre public school. Elementary through
junior high I got to participate in the fine APT (Academic Program for the Talented)
program, which has, unfortunately, undergone many changes since.
In high school I challenged
myself in many ways. Though not athletic, I participated in Debate, Theatre (former
member of Thespians troupe 1102), Marching Band and Pep Band (is there any finer
instrument than the trombone?), as well as taking a gruelling set of coursework from
the International Baccalaureate curriculum.
After those wonderful 4 years, I headed off to college at Washington University. There, I initially undertook
to study Physics, with the lofty goal of someday being a Physics professor.
Second-semester Quantum Physics taught me better, though, and I changed my major to
Computer Science... a discipline I'd always been interested in, but had not
seriously pursued.
In May of 2001, I finished a BS/MS in Computer Science.
After graduating, with little ado, I began working at Xerox PARC (now spun out, just PARC), on June 11, 2001. I've been there
ever since, soaking up the sun, beauty, and crazy lifestyle of Silicon Valley. If you haven't been here, you really should come out and visit. It's hard to verbalize how nice it is.
So, where might I know you from?
Well, at this point, if you've never been to Cincinnati, Ohio, Saint Louis
Missouri, or the Bay Area in northern California then you probably don't know me. But, just in case you want to know
other strange places you might have come across my name, here are some of the more
out-reaching activities I've involved myself in the past:
- Debate - 1992-1994 - Participated in debate variously around the mid-America
area, ranging from most of Ohio, to various parts of Indiana, Kentucky, and even
Illinois and Iowa.
- KIDLINK - A project for children up to age 15. I had several dozen penpals
through this system, which I accessed through the old classic Tristate Online system
- GT Power Net - I once ran node 006/019 on the GT Power BBS network. I was
primarily interested in ANSI art, improving the operation of Netmail, and exploring
new technologies, such as throwing mail bags around by encoding them as e-mail and
sending them via UUCP instead of dialing direct, as the normal Netmail software did
at the time.
- Various online technologies, most of them open source. Mailing lists I've
haunted in the past include: JavaOS, the Apache Servlet support project, VNC, and RESNET-L. I've recently
started a list to discuss adding light-weight security features to VNC. That list
is called "vnc-sec-l"
So, the web's full of links, right? Here's some stuff that comes up when
you search for "Bryan Pendleton". The first stuff is actually about me.
Can you tell where it starts being about other people using the same
name?
Sites brought back to life by the Wayback Machine:
I've had way too many e-mail addresses over the years. Here's a partial
list:
- [something - I bet you can guess]@pendleton.net
- retired in 2002
- [something much like iname.com address]@mail.com
- still works, but why bother?
- bpendleton@iname.com - Spam bait to the max these days
- bp@tso.cin.ix.net - retired when closed down
- bp@tso.org - same as above
- bpdomain@one.net - really old
- bpendlet@one.net - seldom checked
- bp@rescomp.wustl.edu - from an old campus job
- bryan.pendleton@bpdomain.access.one.net - from the BBS days
- bryan.pendleton@bpdomain.iglou.com - from the BBS days
- bapendle@artsci.wustl.edu - When I was a Physics major
- bap3@cec.wustl.edu - The WashU Engineering School E-mail system
- [various]@[various].geekdom.net - it's my domain name, so I make a lot of
addresses there
- 2680952 on ICQ (I know, not really e-mail, but still)
I've also worked a lot of different places. You might know me from working
any of the following places:
- Household - housewares store that used to be at Tri-County mall in Cincinnati
Ohio
- Paramount's Kings Island - Amusement park
north of Cincinnati
- Tristate Online - a now defunct online service
from the BBS era. Many good times had by all
- Millennium Dynamics, Inc. - A Y2k company that was, at the time, trying to diversify. I was a web developer/researcher. They got bought out by Peritus, a competitor that since has lost considerable market value....
- Duramed Pharmaceuticals - a generic drug
manufacturer in Cincinnati
- Residential Computing at Washington
University - I was a tech for 4 years here, and also partially implemented a
DHCP autoregistration system, before the project was cancelled by a very new
administrative staff member
- Zimmerman Communications - a small technical
support shop in Anderson Ohio. Interesting job, but not a long-term career
prospect.
Since I'm telling you so much about me, how about things that fire me up?
- Extreme Politics - I may engage in some of these... but, come on, how often are
these views/approaches even remotely sensical?
- Ultimate Frisbee - What can I say, it's a great game! I'm not very good,
but I enjoy playing it immensely
- Biking - Just good exercise
- Java - Neat programming language. Fast to
develop in, diverse library. Lots of room for optimizations.
- Personal Privacy - See all of those e-mail addresses above? Almost all of them
have long since been abandoned because people have SOLD ME OUT and
now they get too much SPAM. Grrr....
- Free Speech/Code/etc - Linux EFF, etc.
- Techie-geekiness - GeekDom - my experimental
domain, /., UserFriendly, etc.
- Personal relationships - Well, let's just say I'm writing a book, and
it'll be done someday. You may not learn much reading it, but I've
learned a lot while writing it.
Just like my life, this is a work in progress. It'll never be quite done.
It'll never be perfect. But, all the same, why not drop me a line if you see something missing,
incorrect, or whatever.
The views/information here are my attempt at
collecting information about things in my life. If some of it is wrong, I'm
sorry. I've made every attempt to report things as I saw them. There may be some
facts misrepresented accidentally... please, instead of suing me, send me an e-mail,
and I'll fix it up for you....
